But the real magic? It’s the team behind the scenes—people who are truly passionate about movies and all the tech that makes them great. These folks live and breathe cinema.
In this occasional series, we’ll find out what makes cinema so special to them.
What’s your name and title?
Kevin Draper, product manager, Cinema
How long have you been with Christie?
I’ve been with Christie for 20 years.
What, in your opinion, makes the cinema industry unique?
Cinema is a special medium that brings people together to share in the magic of storytelling on the big screen. The immersive sights and sounds of a cinema create an experience that can’t be replicated at home. At Christie, I’m able to play a part in delivering these unforgettable experiences to audiences around the world.
What has been your proudest (or most memorable!) moment at Christie?
There have been so many. Deploying multiple CP4230 projectors in Paris for the opening of “Alice in Wonderland” was a big one. And who can forget the hundreds of cheering tweens as we supported the “Hannah Montana” presentations with our CP2000-ZX projectors. And 14 years later, we helped to bring “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” to life in Dolby Cinemas.
I’ve been involved in the development of all the Christie media blocks since the IMB-S2 back in 2012. In my current role as product manager for our media block products, I’ve been very proud to introduce our latest IMB-S4 and share its unique features with our partners and customers. But what makes me happiest is any time I get to spend time with cinema owners to help develop solutions that meet their varied needs.
And, of course, it is always very special when my family goes to the local multiplex, and I get to point out the Christie technology that is being used to bring the show to the big screen.
What is cinema to you?
Kevin in conversation at CineEurope.
Cinema has the power to transport you to entirely different worlds, if only for a short time. Whether you're soaring through the floating mountains of Pandora or navigating the ocean depths in a Cold War submarine, no other medium immerses you like film.
What do you like to watch, and what’s your favorite film?
My genre of choice at the cinema is action-adventure. If I had to pick one favorite, it would probably be “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, but “The Hunt for Red October” is probably a close second. And then there are all the “Star Trek” movies….
